Huangcheng Noodle House 山西刀削面 serves up a straightforward but satisfying dining experience centered around authentic Shanxi-style Chinese noodles in Oakland’s bustling Chinatown. This spot is best known for its hand-shaved noodles that come with a variety of flavorful accompaniments ranging from spicy Chongqing Street Noodles to more comforting options like beef sirloin noodle soup.

The atmosphere here is casual and no-frills, fitting for a neighborhood lunch or quick dinner where the focus is firmly on the food itself. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available, making it a cozy place to drop by whether you’re coming in to eat or grabbing takeaway on the go. It tends to draw a mix of locals who appreciate honest Asian fare without the fluff—workers grabbing lunch, families sharing a casual meal, or noodle enthusiasts exploring regional Chinese cooking.

One thing that stands out about Huangcheng Noodle House is the texture of the noodles: they maintain a chewy bounce that pairs well with the house-made sauces and broths. For those who like a bit of heat, the dishes allow you to adjust spice levels, adding just enough chili oil to enliven the bowls without overwhelming the dish. Spicy meat dishes like the couple beef and twice-cooked pork punch through with clear, vibrant flavors, although protein portions can be on the modest side.

Vegetarian diners also have options like the vegetarian fried noodles and various vegetable sides such as shredded potato with hot pepper or cucumber in chili oil. Dumplings—available fresh or frozen to take home—offer another avenue to explore Shanxi flavors beyond the noodles.

The service reflects a friendly neighborhood spot, with staff who are welcoming and attentive without fuss. Ordering is done at the table with payment upfront, lending to a relatively efficient flow even during busy times, such as weekday dinners when the place tends to fill up.

For those looking for a casual, unpretentious noodle-focused meal in Oakland’s Chinatown, Huangcheng Noodle House provides a reliable option. It’s particularly appealing if you want to experience Shanxi’s distinctive hand-shaved noodles, enjoy a no-pressure dining vibe, and try dishes that range from mildly spicy to flavorful without overdoing it.

Delicious and chewy noodles and very flavorful with a good level of spice when requested! Highly recommend, and the vegetarian dishes and noodles are all excellent!

They had both indoor and outdoor seating, good place to come eat. Ordered the pork spareribs, street noodle soup, and noodle beef. Note: both noodle dishes share the same type of noodle so mix it up for variety. overall, The food was delicious but not magic. Service was great —friendly server Complimented my nails and we discussed nail art They take your order at your table and you pay before eating which was different. Payment must be made with Cash or Venmo only.

It was a packed Wednesday night when we came by and we ordered a beef plate and their main popular item, chongqing street noodle. We also shared some shredded potato as an appetizer. The food arrived and it was all so fresh and delicious. I liked that they added just the right amount of chili oil for a small spice but not enough to make me feel like I was going to break out in acne or feel unhealthy from the oils. The hand cut noodles were delicious, bouncy and had quite a bit of texture. The potatoes had a nice crunch and the beef... mm tender and packed of spices. Overall, a very delicious experience ~

One of the best meals and service experiences I’ve had in Oakland! My partner and I stopped in the other day, and everything, from the food to the warm energy, was top-notch. We ordered the chicken fried rice and the spicy beef noodles, and both dishes were so bomb, flavorful, fresh, and cooked perfectly. The kind of food you keep thinking about after you leave. The service was just as memorable. The staff made us feel so welcomed and taken care of, water cups were always filled, smiles all around, and they even brought out a little bowl of water for my dog. That thoughtful touch went above and beyond and really stood out to me. Oakland has a lot of great restaurants, but this spot is definitely at the top of my list now. I’ll absolutely be back, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for delicious food, warm vibes, and genuinely kind service.

Good place for a quick bite. The atmosphere and service are no frills, but the food is quite tasty. We ordered the Chongqing Street Noodle (D11) and the Noodle with twice-cooked pork (D10). The portion sizes were good, but there was very little protein in either bowl. Aside from that, the noodles had a nice bounce to them and the broth was flavorful. Just beware that both were a bit spicy if you are sensitive to heat.

Delicious noodles and more. Potstickers are also excellent. You can dial in the heat from zero to super hot. Friendly service. The noodles are hand made which takes four hours to make. Good prices too. Cuisine is from Northern China, near Beijing.

Flavorful chinese food with enough options for vegetarians to enjoy!! Compared to the size of their menu, veggie options are very few, but the ones that can be ordered are very tasty. Ma Po Tofu looked sweet but had perfect spice, Seasame noodles & veggie fried noodles were mild. Best were the Chongqing street style noodles that they made vegetarian and it was delicious with peanuts. As you leave the host nicely says "See you tomorrow"!! If I had lived there I would go back for the food for sure.
